RPM for Speech Therapy

Monitor Speech Related Issues with RPM

Wanda Health specialises in the monitoring of speech disorders that can arise due to numerous medical conditions, illnesses, brain injuries, birth asphyxia, muscle weaknesses, and psychological disorders, which primarily manifest in younger children.

With around 5% of children aged between 3 and 17 in the US requiring speech therapy and growth in the speech therapy market expected to reach $6.35 billion by 2028, a recently introduced series of RPM-based billing codes can make therapies and successful outcomes more accessible to large proportions of the population.

Untreated speech disorders can lead to more severe outcomes and healthcare treatment costs, including but not limited to hearing loss, neurological conditions, and communication and swallowing difficulties, making cost-effective treatment a priority for many healthcare providers.

Why RPM for Speech Therapy?

In 2022, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched three new remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) codes. These billing codes work in much the same way as other RPM codes but are focused on therapeutic care delivery and remote patient monitoring.

RPM devices are well-suited to patient data collection, providing real-time, accurate measurements to help practitioners adjust care planning and treatment protocols and evaluate how well current care is addressing each patient's condition.

Practitioners prescribe devices to monitor various vital signs, depending on the underlying cause of the speed disorder, such as devices to track:

  • Respiratory system functionality

  • Adherence to medication prescriptions

  • Responses to therapy and physio exercises

  • Improvements to the patient’s musculoskeletal health

In many cases, clinicians may combine RTM and RPM to provide personalized, ongoing care, ensuring they receive immediate alerts when a physiological reading gives cause for concern and have a full picture of a patient’s holistic health, which may affect the treatments and therapies they implement.

The Benefits of Using RPM for Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is necessary for a broad array of conditions. Still, with a large percentage of pediatric patients, RPM is an excellent way to improve care quality without requiring children to attend regular or daily in-person consultations and interactions.

For Patients

  • Better Long-Term Outcomes: Submitting daily readings to a practitioner means patients receive adaptive care with the flexibility to adjust to changing symptoms, recovery stages, and therapy responses. Treating and improving speech disorders quickly can prevent further degeneration and help patients with neurological conditions retain speech abilities that may have otherwise been gradually lost.

  • Convenient Access to Care: Traveling to a physician’s office or clinic on a regular basis is a significant barrier to care, particularly for minors with speech disorders in need of more intense therapies. Conducting virtual assessments, submitting measurements, and participating in consultations removes the time and cost required to travel and makes care more accessible to the patient.

  • Active Participation: Patients receiving virtual support with speech therapies are involved and play an important role in using their prescribed RPM devices or following advice and educational information delivered through our virtual care platform. This level of participation improves patient satisfaction and provides access to real-time monitoring a patient can review and understand.

For Healthcare Organizations

  • Additional Revenue Sources: Practitioners and speech therapists can broaden access to therapies while improving revenues, utilizing RPM services to extend ongoing treatments to wider patient cohorts and integrating billing practices with the newly introduced RTM CPT codes.

  • Accurate Data Monitoring: Speech therapy is often a progressive treatment plan where therapists and physicians rely on reliable, up-to-date data to make decisions about how to improve patient progress. RPM ensures measurements are available on-demand, augmenting the ability of medical professionals to adjust therapies to each patient.

  • Comprehensive Health Tracking: Patients presenting with speech disorders often have multiple indications or comorbidities, with speech therapy necessary following accidents, TBIs, strokes, and after the diagnosis of diseases like dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and degenerative conditions. RPM devices can effectively measure all relevant data points while aiding patient-centered speech therapy services.
