RPM for COPD

Empowering COPD Patients and Healthcare Professionals

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, covers a number of conditions that affect lung function and cause airways to narrow. The American Lung Association reports that almost 150,000 adults died from COPD in 2020 as the fifth most common cause of fatalities.

Wanda Health provides innovative RPM for COPD services to assist medical practitioners in monitoring and treating the condition, reducing the number of preventable deaths, and tailoring care to deliver targeted support to prevent unnecessary hospitalization.

Why RPM for COPD?

The costs of treating COPD are substantial, amounting to around $50 billion yearly, including $8 billion extracted from the economy to cover the costs of indirect comorbidities. RPM allows medical professionals to offer personalized healthcare, using cutting-edge COPD RPM devices to closely track symptoms and indicators to make swift, decisive judgments about the right care plan for the individual.

RPM is accessible, cost-effective, and scalable, broadening the reach of medical facilities and ensuring COPD treatments, medications, and monitoring can effectively manage outcomes, reduce fatality rates, and assist people living with COPD needing ongoing support.

The Benefits of Using RPM for COPD Patients and Practitioners

COPD has a global prevalence of almost 12%. It often results in fatalities where patients do not realize that even minor changes to their symptoms are a signal of a worsening condition or the first warning that the disease requires emergency intervention.

Implementing RPM for COPD provides the data-led decision-making and oversight medical teams need to identify when indicators such as daily respiratory rates increase, prompting a consultation to uncover other potential issues such as shortness of breath, lack of energy, unintentional weight loss, and wheezing.

While there is no cure for COPD, the disease can be well managed to alleviate symptoms and slow the disease from progressing, including lifestyle changes. Medical standards dictate that patients require treatment within seven days of symptom changes before more intrusive interventions are needed. Using RPM to spot that crucial time can prevent patients from being admitted to the hospital by using steroid medications, antibiotics, and bronchodilators which act quickly to relieve COPD symptoms before they become an emergency.

Regular, precise tracking is a fundamental requirement to enable practitioners to deliver the best standards of care. RPM is an excellent solution for services that can extend the same level of diligent monitoring to large patient groups with equal responsiveness across the board.

For practitioners, RPM offers a streamlined way to stay abreast of patient well-being, determine when data requires immediate action, and provide a more accessible service without requiring patients to visit a clinic or centre multiple times per month to have their symptoms and vital signs checked.

  • CARE PROVIDERS offering care for post-hospital and post-care patients, implementing RPM for COPD to ensure patients recover well, and intervene where readings indicate any cause for concern.

  • HEALTH MANAGEMENT TEAMS and supervisory bodies extracting reporting data around general population health or using RPM devices to provide early disease detection and prevention.

  • DIAGNOSTIC TESTING COMPANIES compiling reports and data on patient health, responses to treatment protocols and care plans, and interpreting correlations between RPM device readings and patient outcomes.

  • RESEARCHERS conducting clinical trials using RPM to collate data from test subjects and ensure outcomes are thoroughly reported, documented, and analyzed.

Our Devices

Wanda Health supports a comprehensive selection of high-specificity RPM devices, all aligned with the monitoring needs of COPD doctors and medical professionals. Devices are user-friendly, extremely accurate, and automated without requiring complex patient usage instructions.

PULSE OXIMETERS

Oximetry is an important aspect of COPD management and assesses the oxygen levels in the patient’s red blood cells using light waves. Critical falls in blood oxygen can be severe, with RPM ensuring practitioners receive an immediate alert if blood oxygen saturation falls under a minimum baseline level.

WEIGHT SCALES

Sudden and unexpected weight loss is a common side effect of COPD, caused by excessive pressure on the person's metabolic rate to sustain partial lung function. Many specialists need to monitor weight rigorously and advise on additional caloric intakes to ensure patients have the nutrition and calories to remain well.

BLOOD PRESSURE CUFFS

COPD can cause changes to blood pressure, with an elevated risk of heart failure, heart attack, and blood clots – all of which, if undetected or untreated, can be fatal. Measuring blood pressure through Bluetooth-connected cuffs shows the medical professional how their patient's heart function changes or responds to treatment.

GLUCOMETERS

As many as 16% of COPD patients also have diabetes and require RPM. Glucometers keep track of blood sugar levels, helping medical service providers advise when dietary changes and sugar consumption are causing concern and giving patients control over how lifestyle adjustments are impacting their readings.

In some cases, clinicians may recommend additional devices or deploy one or all of the above RPM devices to one patient depending on their current care plan, symptoms, and the progression of the disease.

Keeping pace with every change in patient symptoms, side effects, and overall well-being is an excellent way for medical professionals to make informed recommendations and help patients understand why and how their medical data is changing.
